The Art of DyingI want to die in the spring free from the sterile odor of hospital quarters and the IV sticking out of my withered arm I want to meet death at the cross roads of beginning and endThe Art of Dying
I should be free from human attachments Not carried off to the sad key of a funeral dirge With old friends and lovers weeping at my side For this I have no need
I never understood why the people around here spoke so quickly Yelling about something that was better off forgotten Wasting the time they could have used to actually see On a boastful imposition of a weak self

MeditationThere is something that you should know about yourself This is that you are insane Remember this when you fabricate the conversations to win a lovers heart When you imagine the glorious impression you will leave on others And during the anxiety you feel for having made a mistakeMeditation
Your mind is a poisonous fog in which you must traverse The injustice of the past twists the faces of the present An old man with a cracked face stares at you from the corner of the room Laughing, as he twirls his cane
You must remember to breathe Your breath is the only thing that y

Will to PowerYou know your strings have wept too long As they strain and crack out of tune Every bend pulls the vitality out of your song Leaving a dissonant chorus whose meaning is forgotten With lyrics written in hungerWill to Power
You thought you were composing a love song But instead, you were writing a dirge Discordant melodies following a line of cars to the grave Coaxing your body into a feeble surrender
You were a born again romantic A resurrected idealist, peace maker, and socialist Finding new reasons for hope in each word of the sermon Each one dying where the next began

Why do I know both the names of J.D. Salinger and Kurt Vonnegut? Sure I could Google them, but there's more interest in human interaction!
Vonnegut is known for being a "black humorist," a term used, to my best ability to describe it, as a cynical and somewhat absurd at times sense of humor with dark undertones: kind of like a B Movie horror film. Vonnegut also writes a lot of social commentary (i.e. "Man Without a Country"<--- that's a good one).
Salinger writes more about situations of ordinary people while applying a grade of existential thought to the stories (esp. in his short stories). Catcher in the Rye was all about an adolescent who had grown up too fast and struggled with his own machinations about life, applying himself, and loss of innocence.
Any of this ringing bells?
